Residents encouraged to recycle

Ennis is working toward being a more environmentally friendly city, with several outlets offered to locals to recycle.
However, less than 8 percent of Ennis is taking advantage of a free opportunity to recycle offered by the city.
The program is in its fourth year of giving environmentally conscious members of the community a way to divert waste headed to the Ellis County Landfill north of town.
City Manager Steve Howerton said the city provides free bags and combined stream recycling, allowing users to put paper, plastics and metals in the same bag. Loads are sorted at the drop-off point at the Trinity Waste Services Materials Recovery Facility in Dallas.
Howerton has tracked the program since its inception in 2005.
“For the year 2008, we had an average of 362 participating households, which is 7.54 percent total participating on an average basis,” Howerton said.
Collection has roughly tripled since Ennis began the program. In 2005-06, the city collected 48.2 tons of recyclable material, and data available from 2007-08 shows nearly 140 tons of collected waste.
“We expect to have that same continued level of growth over the coming years,” Howerton said.
