Taking life one day at a time

For Regina and Wes Mach, the motto of taking life one day at a time has never seemed more prophetic.
Since their 13-year old daughter, Chandler, was diagnosed with leukemia, life has been passing them by day by day as they struggle to come to terms with the news and the new roles each of them has within their family. For Regina, who now stays home with Chandler, the most difficult thing is keeping her daughter well.
“I have counted it up and since we learned of her diagnosis 30 days ago, we have spent 18 of those days in the hospital and three at the doctor’s office, so we have only had nine ‘normal’ days,” she said. “Our number one priority right now is making sure she does not get an infection or fever because what a normal child would be able to simply take an over the counter medicine for, could really be devastating for her.”
To help keep Chandler away from situations where she might be susceptible to infections, she has not returned to school since her diagnosis and the earliest she will go back is in the fall. While she is taking treatments and medications that her family hope will send the cancer into remission, they are taking the steps to be better prepared if her condition requires a more advanced course of treatment.
