Ennis Symphonic Band sweeps UIL competition

Although the Symphonic 1 Band at Ennis Junior High School earned a sweepstakes award at the UIL Concert and Sight-reading competition with their outstanding performance, Director Steven Bunch hopes the group’s best performance is ahead of them.
In order for a band to win the sweepstakes award, the band must earn a first division superior rating in both concert and sight-reading performances, Bunch said. In the concert competition, bands play three prepared pieces of music. In sight-reading competition, bands perform a piece they have never seen before.
For the EJHS Symphonic 1 Band to receive the sweepstakes award is a big accomplishment, but the band program at EJHS has a tradition of doing well in contests.
Bunch said at the beginning of each school year, students are reminded about the long winning tradition and encouraged to work hard and take pride in their performance to continue that tradition.
“We expect a lot out of them, and the town expects the best from them, too,” he said. “This community is used to success, so we do what we can to maintain the tradition.”
Since the band is comprised mainly of seventh graders, many aren’t used to being in competitions.
