Firefighters blaze out of gate for 9-4 win

Firefighters remain one of the premier freshman league squads
Just as a strong finish can put a team over the top, a ballclub can seize a game by the throat in the opening moments.
In Wednesday night’s freshman contest, the Ennis Firefighters (6-1-1) smacked several early hits and took advantage of some free passes to jump in front of American Legion (1-6-1) by a 5-1 margin. The action was nearly even from there, but the damage was done as the Firefighters emerged with a 9-4 triumph. Both teams finished with five hits as American Legion committed more errors (4-3).
“We tweaked the lineup a little bit and I think it’s helped us play better baseball,” said EF coach Brian Prachyl.
“We’re right in the mix for first place and hopefully we can stay there.”
John Lopez has taken over an AL team that dominated the league for several years, but nearly all of the experienced players are no longer in the fold.
“Our pitchers are all young and I think we’ll come out of this as a winning team in the future,” Lopez said.
