Area jumpy over H1N1

Although Ennis Regional Medical Center has not yet had any confirmed cases of the H1N1 influenza, many Ennis residents are concerned about the novel strain as flu season gets underway this fall.
Thomas Hicks, who is director of the emergency room at ERMC and a registered nurse, said the death of a Mesquite girl due to H1N1 earlier this month has the Ennis community exercising extreme caution when it comes to their health. Many people have come to the emergency room with what they think are flu symptoms, but are actually not all that severe, Hicks said.

The flu cases the emergency room has seen have all been seasonal flu, he said. As required by the Texas Department of State Health Services, patients at ERMC are not tested for H1N1 unless they are hospitalized.
