A game of patient strategy

Every Thursday, a group of students gather in the Learning Center at the Ennis Public Library to learn chess, but the class instructor hopes they learn much more than just a game.
The class, one of many offered free of charge by the Friends of the Library, is taught by Larry Candy. Candy said he had a passion for chess from a young age. Growing up in California, he was taught the game when he was nine, he said. Candy held his own at tournaments all over San Diego County, and left his teachers searching for worthy opponents for Candy.

“Each one they found, I destroyed,” Candy said.
