Spotlight on …

Before Shelby Lytle, 22, and Brianna Mikula, 23, even met, they already had something in common. Not necessarily something that was a conversation starter, but something that would end up being a big part of both of their lives, especially their lives together — the war in Iraq.
Seven years ago, on March 20, 2003, at 5:34 a.m. Baghdad time, the military invasion of Iraq began. The mission outlines were clear; overthrow Saddam Hussein’s regime, and obtain weapons of mass destruction.

The shock waves of going to war slowly sunk in. Brianna recalls it being the first war to affect her generation; she said being a small-town girl she wasn’t sure what to expect from then-President George W. Bush’s decision to involve the United States. She also didn’t know that in the very near future, she would have someone close to her going into this war.
