Beta Sigma Phi mark Founder’s Day

This week the privilege was all mine when my attendance was requested at the Beta Sigma Phi Founder’s Day celebration. First of all, talk about having a hostess with the mostest. These women are the definition of southern hospitality. Each one greeted me warmly during my entrance through the door, and invited me to join them in their meal.
Goodness gracious!
After a prayer was said over the meal, the ladies all took turns at the delicious buffet-style spread, and then held polite, yet humorous, conversation at the dining tables.

It felt like I was at charm school. Precious glass coasters were in front of the plates, and lacy cloth napkins were in our laps.

Maybe the movie Steel Magnolias is a better description for the experience. The movie comes to mind only because of the fondness and respect each Beta Sigma Phi has for one another. It was evident in the way they introduced the “former first ladies” and the way they offered to take each other’s dinner and dessert plates to the kitchen.

Like sisters, really.

That was precisely the reason for the season too, to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the organization’s founding. To show this in a bigger picture, two chapters of Beta Sigma Phi from Ennis came as one to this gathering, Epsilon Nu and Iota Eta.

Except for the assigned seating, it would be hard to distinguish who is from which chapter. They get along splendidly.

Following dinner, there was a welcome and then the Founder’s Day pledge was recited, along with the presentation of chapter awards.
The new theme for the year was also announced, and it was quite fitting for me, personally, because I had just spent the prior hour getting to know the friendly women at my table.

“New Paths to New Friendships” is the new theme for Beta Sigma Phi’s upcoming year, from now until 2011.

Here I am nonchalantly chatting about the University of North Texas, my road trip through Yellowstone National Park last summer, and laughing to a cute story about an incident with a granddaughter and an accidental long-distance phone call to Japan.

So, without realizing it, I was engaging in the new theme, and with the company surrounding me, it happened effortlessly.

Mind you, it was a part of my job to be there, covering the occasion, but the job doesn’t require myself to have a good time, however, that’s what came about.

Like the Beta Sigma Phi women who brought me into their world and gave me a glimpse of their rituals, traditions, and heritage, my challenge is to now follow their theme along with them for the year as well.

Of course I won’t be attending meetings, or actually becoming a member, but my best efforts to create new paths that lead to new friendships will be in the forefront of my mind during my daily routines, just like it will be for the charming and wonderful ladies of Beta Sigma Phi.
