Local voters must get informed, involved

Ellis County officials are busy getting out information about the County’s upcoming bond election and we hope our readers will take the time to get informed about this important proposal.
On May 12, Ellis County residents will have the chance to vote on the plan to issue $53.9 million in bonds to fund the construction of new county facilities, including a new administrative and justice office building and a new county jail facility. The facilities will be constructed in Waxahachie, which has some Ennis residents wondering why our city won’t be receiving a portion of that money.
County Commissioners have indicated they will be using other funds to purchase property for future sub-courthouses in Ennis, Red Oak and Midlothian at a later date.
It should go without saying that approval of this bond election is no sure thing. Any effort to raise taxes is typically met with skepticism and opposition. Regardless of the final outcome, we hope voters will do the proper research and make an informed decision.
From a financial standpoint, it would seem there are some valid arguments in favor of constructing new facilities. However, that doesn’t mean this bond proposal is the best way to go. Questions need to be answered about how much tax burden we should take on now, in order to provide for expected future growth. Are we spending too much, too soon? Could we get by with less? We also suspect some specific plans to upgrade facilities in cities outside of Waxahachie will help to win over some voters. Each person will have to answer these questions for themselves and weigh the benefits and consequences of their vote.
But in the end, the wishes of Ennis citizens won’t matter a bit if we don’t get out and vote. Unfortunately, recent elections have resulted in pretty poor voter turnout in Ennis and as a result, we’ve sent a message that we’re not all that concerned with local government. We hope that’s not the case, because if that trend continues with the May 12 election, we’ll only have ourselves to blame if we don’t like the outcome.
