Still hunting some gifts? Shop local

There are less than a week left of opportunities to squeeze in Christmas shopping for the season before the day is upon us, and we know many around town still have some gifts to buy.
We’re going to stress here that, especially now, it’s important for us to flex our local buying options and use local outlets for obtaining those gifts. Especially with larger retail centers within a day-trip’s distance, encouraging all of us to remember the impact of local shopping is important.

Shopping locally, a mantra that has gained more and more momentum among communities nationwide, is the No. 1 way we as residents of our city can address the economic hardship that exists here. Unemployment is higher than it has been in years around Texas and the nation at large, but we feel it particularly acutely in smaller, more rural communities, and addressing that on the local level means creating the demand that keeps businesses in the practice of hiring employees.

Much of our community is built on a backbone of strong industrial production. Expanding the influence, so to speak, of our retail economy has to begin here, with the way we shop during holiday periods retailers rely on becoming that much more important.

If you’re looking for deals on clothes for the winter (which officially begins this week), a new automobile for a special someone, big box appliance purchases (complete with state rebates for energy efficiency outlined in Friday’s edition) or some other last-minute Christmas idea, buy it here in Ennis.

The impact you’ll be making on the current and future health of the economy here will be significant, even if it’s not immediately apparent.
