County bans open burns

Ellis County is back under fire restriction after commissioners approved a 90-day burn ban Thursday.
Jim Pharr, inspector for the fire marshal’s office, said although the Keetch-Byram Drought Index is currently below the normal threshold for a ban, a recent increase in grass fires throughout the county was a motivating factor. Contiguous counties including Navarro, Tarrant, Hill and Johnson have all enacted a burn ban, as well.

Diana Buckley, Ellis County communications director, said another incentive for the burn ban was the recently issued proclamation of potential fire danger from Gov. Rick Perry, which mentions Ellis County.
