Budget plan a step at a time

With today marking the end of the Ennis Independent School District’s initial employee reduction incentive plan, the community is waiting to learn more about the level of hardship the current state budget squeeze will pass down to us.

Superintendent Barbara Qualls has regularly updated the community on the goings-on in Austin that affect how next year’s school district plan will be mapped and the rationale behind the current decisions being made, even if hard numbers have been somewhat hard to come by.

One example, the closure of the EISD’s daycare facility represents a significant savings that truly impacts only a select number of teachers and district employees with children too young to enter the school system. That was an extremely potent benefit to those individuals it served, but the district’s subsidy of the program couldn’t be maintained in light of the overarching possibility that people could lose their jobs.

Once today’s deadline has passed and the numbers are tallied, the district will need to take other steps in order to meet projected shortfalls so that its budget makes fiscal sense.
