David Van Zandt – Random Thoughts – The New Year Begins

When the new year begins, it feels like everything is possible. You CAN make those personality and behavioral changes because this IS THE YEAR! That is why people make resolutions for change. “I’m going to lose weight! I’m going to quit smoking! I’m going to work out every day! I’m going to stop reacting to things and think about them first!” The problem with these things is not the desire to do them, like spending less and saving more, it is that change takes time and effort. I myself can cut out all sugar and carbohydrates…. until someone brings in cake, bread or pies. I have the desire, but the effort is lacking. It is this thought that got me started thinking and letting my mind take me where it wants to go. Random Thoughts, indeed. I think it is the same reason that many of us say that we are not going to only live in our own “echo chamber” of ideas. It is admirable to wish to debate the “Big Ideas” and dispassionately argue with an adversary about the different views on any of the give subjects of Religion and/or Politics. Most of us are comfortable with the decisions we have made and really are not interested in the reasons others do not agree with us. I’m guilty of that. I think we all have the desire to only hear “our” side of the arguments and not really explore the others. It is hard to do, to step out of your bubble; but it is almost always rewarding to do so.
