Ecclesiastes, the sequel

After the boxes and wrapping paper from Christmas Past had been discarded or recycled, I assumed a horizontal position on my favorite sofa, pulled the blanket up to my chin and grabbed the clicker, listening to all the television banter about the year coming to a close. For this auspicious occasion, an area television station chose to interview a palmist. Yes, a palmist. They’ve got a state university filled with professionals on weather and economy and government, and they consulted a palmist. “I see plenty of jobs,” she said mysteriously. “Less tax,” she added for effect. “Much prosperity.” I admit a bias against palmists which began in the fourth grade at my school’s Halloween carnival.
