It’s Just Lunch


My mother never watched soap operas. She was more likely to turn the television set off, than to turn it on. She hummed while she ironed in the afternoon heat, or read a little bit when she finished, but she didn’t rely on a television set for daytime drama. When I began noticing “Days of Our Lives” and “Another World,” she resisted. “There is nothing good on that television set after the noontime news. You don’t need that bad habit.” As we all know, her denouncement made the fruit all the more forbidden and even more appealing. So, during the summer months when the living was easy, I would often pile up on the sofa and watch a few “soaps”—especially if she was away for an hour or so.
