Let there be light

 

Before venturing to our community’s Downtown Christmas Celebration, I halfway

decorated the Christmas tree in our family room.

We are among the purists who, for as long as we’re able, will enjoy the smell of a

fresh evergreen tree. I can see—in the distance—a year when that will no longer be

possible, but this year it was possible.

That might be Miracle No. 1.

Upon my return from the downtown event, I evaluated my previous decorating

efforts and decided that I had done a fine job with this year’s tree. Little was left to

be done. I finished hanging about a dozen leftover ornaments which needed hooks

or repairs, and as I hung the last one on the tree—I repeat, the very last one—I

heard a pop and three strings of lights went out in a flash.
