On Polka Fest, Memorial Day and graduation


Every once in a while a weekend like this one comes along in Ennis, a weekend full of celebration, dancing and reverence for our heroes.
For the homegrown Ennis folks, Memorial Day and the National Polka Festival, as you know, go hand-in-hand. “When’s Polka Fest, again?”
“Memorial Day weekend, this year and every year.”For those new to Ennis, or to the Polka Festival: Welcome. You’re going to love it. So, we always know how we’re going to spend our Memorial Day weekend. It might include a family barbecue or a relaxing weekend in for some people, but for the Ennisites who like a good time, it means polka! Obviously, Memorial Day is about more than a good time, though, which is why we feel it’s necessary to issue this reminder: While Friday, Saturday and Sunday may mean a good time out with friends and family, Monday is about something bigger. Most of us know someone who dedicated time to the armed services. It’s true that everyone who serves in the military sacrifices something. For some, it’s a sacrifice of health, or even sanity.
