Our Point of View – Supporting Ellis County history

The history of Ellis County is one to be proud of, and the Ennis News is at the forefront of sharing important stories of the people and events of the local past. The Memories page stories that are spotlighted regularly in this paper have a following beyond Ennis, although the majority of articles in the Sunday feature deal with this city’s heritage. The Ellis County Museum, now planning for its 2019 fundraiser, is one of several local historical organizations that has expressed support for this publication’s sharing of local history.
The Texas State legislature established Ellis County on December 20, 1849 when it passed a bill sponsored by Gen. Edward H. Tarrant. It was drawn from Navarro County and is named for Richard Ellis. Today, Ellis County is home to over 152,000 residents. The County’s total area is 952 square miles, and is comprised of 15 cities, seven towns, and the unincorporated areas that include Avalon, Forreston and Telico.
