Deacon Don Griffith Special to The News According to the law (Leviticus 19:13; Deuteronomy 24:14-15) the workers are paid beginning with those hired last to those hired first—all are paid the same wage. No oriental will stand for hours in the market-place; hence they sit about idly gossiping in the market-place. The fact that between 4 and 5 p.m., the master of the house was still looking for more laborers, shows that the work was unusually urgent. The work had to be finished before the onset of the rainy season, so the race against time became serious. The question in verse 6 does not express surprise, but reproach.
