Polka Festival time is here again

Polka Festival Time is upon us. It has been a busy time around the chamber. In addition to our normal chamber activities, we have been busy working with our Food Vendors and Arts and Crafts Vendors for the Memorial Festival Weekend.

If you are visiting our wonderful city, Vitame Vas, we welcome you to the 45th Annual National Polka Festival.

Please be sure to “Czech” out all the great entertainment and activities we have planned for the entire family.

We are honored and excited to have H.E. Karel Schwarzenberg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic accompanied by a number of Czech dignitaries participating in our Czech celebration.

The festival was originally founded by local residents Raymond Zapletal, Len Gehrig and Joe Liska to keep our Czech heritage, music and traditions alive and remembered.

World War II Veterans who assisted in the liberation of Czechoslovakia in 1945 will be recognized by Prime Minister Schwarzenberg Saturday morning.

They are Willie F. Laza, PFC – Company A 313th Infantry, Anton V. Rejcek – 135th Quartermaster Truck Company, Charlie J. Tomek, SGT – Battery A 371st Field Artillery Battalion, Benjamin F. Zajicek, PFC – Company I 38th Infantry, Hugo W. Gorgas, PFC – 514th Field Arty Bn and CPT Benn A. Gleason – 411th Infantry 103d Division.

The chamber is looking for volunteers for Friday evening in assisting the arts and crafts vendors and food vendors to locate their space assignments.

If you could spare a couple of hours this Friday evening, May 27, please contact the chamber. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Brochures will be available at the Chamber Information Booth downtown this weekend for the listing of all weekend activities.

Congratulations go out to our 2011 Leadership Ennis graduates. They are Sherri Emerson – Chief Nursing Office, Ennis Regional Medical Center; Gil Escobar – President/CEO, My IT Systems; Brenda Haupt – Vice President Globe Products & Buna Bean Coffee Roasters; Kacy Hibdon former staff writer with the Ennis Daily News; Theresa Johnson – Coordinator of Workforce Education Navarro College; Angie Juenemann – Financial Advisor Edward Jones Investments; Mary Macalik – Executive Secretary Ennis Chamber of Commerce; Linda Rudd – Realtor City Real Estate; and Adina Toth Banking Officer Prosperity Bank.

Their commitment in giving of their time to make the monthly classes has increased their knowledge about their community and built their leadership skills.

Class coordinator Dolores McKibbin of Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Homes was recognized for her time and dedication to the program.

Also recognized were sponsors Allen Samuels Autoplex, Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home, Ennis ISD, Ennis Regional Medical Center, Hayden Financial Partners, and Laurie and John Mah. Applications for the 2011-12 Class applications are currently being accepted.

Please call the chamber if you would like more information or an application about Leadership Ennis.

Our Retail Committee continues to work to promote Ennis to a variety of retailers including restaurants.

They are providing information about Ennis and inviting them to visit and see what our community has to offer.

Recognizing the state of the economy today, a lot of new retail growth has been placed on hold, but we will continue to promote Ennis and hope that one day soon we will have news of our expanding community.

Next week, as we wrap up Polka Festival, we will start planning our Annual Chamber Auction.

The 2011 theme is “Wranglers and Rhinestones.” So be sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, Aug. 27 and join us for a fun evening.

It will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall with doors opening at 5:30 pm. Watch for more details as they develop.

Jeannette Patak is the president of the Ennis Chamber of Commerce.
