Soft targets are easy

Years ago in Boynton Beach, Florida, I was a young chap playing Little League baseball for the Optimist Club. They sponsored us. We wore yellow. We were not very good, but we were bright. I became acutely aware of something opposing players chanted when I approached the batter’s box. I’m no Einstein, but when they shouted in unison, “Easy out,” then repeated it again and again, I figured it was not a compliment. Focusing intently on getting a hit, most of the time the results proved the other guys were right. When a similar term, “soft target,” is used today, it generally is directed at a person or a thing that is considered unprotected or vulnerable, primarily to an attack. A compliment it is not.
