Thanksgiving fun, and change

The basement of my maternal grandparents’ farm home was the place for kids. At least it was at Thanksgiving.
That basement seemed enormous. A kitchen, big dining table, living zone with a TV, pool table, bathroom, and Grandpa’s office were places we kids enjoyed. The cougar skull on Grandpa’s roll top desk was always worth a look – if nothing more than seeing the indentation between the eyes where a previous gunshot had glanced away. A refrigerator for just us kids? Unheard of at any of our homes. Our own table, where we could go ahead and make a mess eating without adults shaming us? Joyous.
Those are Thanksgiving scenes of a childhood from four and a half decades ago.
