The worth of children

Years ago a famous writer, Mark Twain, spoke of the challenge of raising children and turning them into young adults. He said when your children are nearing adolescence, put them in a wooden barrel and knock out the knot hole so you can feed them. He said when they turn 16, “plug up the hole.” He message was pretty clear, raising children is one thing, leading them through their teenage years is another challenge altogether. One needn’t look far to see the fruit of recent generations to understand the directions they can go, good, bad or indifferent. They are a direct reflection of the families and homes they came from, with words “family” and “home” being semantics that are stretched and twisted if not altogether changed. Unfortunately, the breakdown of the American family and all of its morals and values has coincided with numerous other failures, including marriage, education, politics, and the church. Each are filled with strengths and weaknesses as well as flaws. One that Ennis has long seen as a sense of duty, the family, is supported in this city in its Czech heritage, in the dynamics of faith, the priority of education and in a healthy respect for a strong work ethic.
