What are dreams, anyway?


“To sleep – per chance to dream. Ay, there’s the rub.” – Hamlet, Act III, Scene 1, 65-68, William Shakespeare What are dreams? Are they, as Sigmund Freud surmised, the sub-conscious mind working out the events of the day? Or, are they ethereal visions of past events and their meanings? Or could they be warnings given to us by God of future events? Or, are they simply entertaining snippets of life-like movies that the brain uses to pass the time while we sleep? All I know about dreams is that I have no idea what they are. I just know that from time to time I am plagued by dreams that seem to interrupt my normal rest patterns at night because of how vivid and real they feel. I do not normally sleep well. I get up at least once per night to inspect the plumbing.
