Words with friends

I feel like Barbara Kelly every time somebody stops me and says, “There was a word in your column last week that I didn’t know.”
Really. Was there?

“Yeah, what did that mean?” they often ask, and I ponder the question appropriately even though I often have no idea which word, or even which column, they are referencing.

That’s when Barbara Kelly—my high school English teacher who elevated sarcasm to an art form—emerges, front and center, in my memories.
