Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:
Yesterday I found a bright orange notice on my front door from The Department of Health
Services of Ennis, TX. The notice had a list of things a citizen could be charged with, or fined
with, in Municipal Court. My threat was high grass and weeds in excess of 12 inches in height and
trimming to curb line.
I don’t know the correct botanical term for those wispy, thin weeds that come up all over Ennis
this time of year, but there aren’t that many. First frost will mow them down. Point being, I have
Rainmasters mow my yard every other week and they do a wonderful job. Trim around my trees,
edge curbs and sidewalks. My complaints with the city of Ennis (I have lived here since 1959 and
graduated from EHS in 1963) are as follows:
1. Why pick on this yard?
2. Would flat dandelions get this threat? Check my yard this spring and summer.
3. There are 14 different violations a citizen of Ennis could be charged with on this notice. So hope
your fence is attractive enough and your car is not on the grass and spruce up your graffiti.
4. Is increasing the city taxes insufficient to raise money for Ennis so let’s find a 72-year-old widow,
fixed income, using a walker, etc., who won’t say anything.
Finally, as a Christian, I resent the scripture at the bottom of the Department of Health Services
email: Isaiah 24:5 “The earth is polluted because of its inhabitants, for they have transgressed laws,
violated statues and broken the ancient covenant.”
I won’t quote the Bible but WILL quote David Lloyd George: “The true test of a civilization is the
way it treats its old people.”
