Mayor’s pub position not outside mainstream

To the editor:

I was disappointed to observe that in its Tuesday issue the Ennis Daily News chose to sensationalize

Monday’s City Commission discussion of proposals that would permit the opening of a clean

neighborhood pub downtown. Notably, the EDN headline reads “Pub still a public issue – Downtown

pastor pushes back, mayor voices support.” Early in the article EDN states that while after the meeting

Mayor Thomas voiced his support, three commissioners had not yet decided, implying that the Mayor’s

position is outside the mainstream. Nowhere does EDN mention that as a lead-in to the discussion,

Commissioner Brian Holley announced that the Main Street Board, of which he is a member, voted

unanimously in support of the proposals. Further, not until its very last paragraph does EDN mention

Marty Nelson of EDC’s report at the beginning of the session that the Economic Development

Corporation and Planning and Zoning Commission, as well as the Main Street Board, had each voted in

support of these proposals.
