A prosperous Ennis


On Nov. 26, 1922 the Austin American Sun ran a story about how Ennis was becoming one of the most prosperous cities in Texas. “Citizens of Ennis proudly point to the fact that the city has one of the largest cotton seed mills in the state,” the paper reported. The city’s success was further attributed to the fact that it “is in the famous black land prairie belt of Texas; has division shops and headquarters of the Southern Pacific lines, whose two branches converge here; lands producing normally about a bale of cotton to the acre, with the lands along the Trinity River as ‘fertile as in the valley of the Nile.’”
