Bitterness and forgiveness

It is interesting to note that the very first words Jesus spoke from the cross were, “Father forgive them.” It is also interesting that forgiveness by Jesus was front and center either directly or indirectly in 65% of what He left us in scripture. St. Paul says in Ephesians 4:31-32, “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, and evil speaking be put away from you along with every form of malice.” Bitterness is an emotional cancer that will eat you up. It is a burden that will crush us, a blaze that will consume us. Bitterness can follow us all the way to the grave. When God closes the curtains of time and draws the shades on the window of history, we may look back and see that bitterness ruined more marriages, soured more lives, divided more churches, and killed more families than any other thing. Bitterness is described as a root—a root is beneath the surface. Roots can stretch deep into the soil of one’s heart. They can be very difficult to remove.
