Happy 90th birthday to Lucion Jessie

By Dr. Bob Uzzel

Pastor, Wayman Chapel AME Church, Ennis, Texas

On Saturday August 13, 2016, family and friends gathered to celebrate the 90th birthday of long-time Corsicana resident Lucion Jessie.  This joyous occasion was held at the Bears Den in Corsicana.

Lucion Jessie, Jr. was born on August 14, 2016 in Embouse, Texas, the son of Lucion Jessie, Sr. and Azzie Lee Jessie.  He grew up in Corsicana.  He had three sisters and one brother.  His grandfather was Wade Jessie, who served as pastor of churches in Roane and Richland.  His great-grandfather was Tom Jessie.

Lucion married Gussie Dewberry of Kerens, Texas on September 15, 1954.  They have 6 children—Brenda; Lucion, III; Cedric; Carolyn; Ronnie Lynn; and Ben.  They also have 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.  Gussie is a nurse who worked for many years at Navarro Regional Medical Center.

Lucion served in the U. S. Army from 1945 to 1949.  He was stationed at Fort

Lewis, Washington; Korea; and Germany.  He enjoyed his military travels in which he met many interesting people.   He is always happy to share military stories.  Upon discharge, he returned to Corsicana, where he worked at the brick yard and at Oil City.  He always enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hanging out with friends.

Lucion’s children describe him as a very good father who was always there for them.  He worked hard and provided well for his family.  There was always a calendar on the wall in which the children would know when they were to do chores, study, etc.  He took them to carnivals, circuses, and other fun activities.  He normally got paid on Friday afternoon and bought groceries afterward.  Friday night was family night in which the children could choose what they wanted to eat.

Although Lucion never attended college, he encouraged his children to do so, to pursue careers of their choice, and to be happy with what they are doing.  From all indications, they all turned out well.

Lucion is a deacon at Mount Olive Baptist Church.  He always taught his family to do right regardless of consequences, you reap what you sow, and nothing can hid from God.

Happy 90th birthday to Lucion Jessie, a great man loved by many.
