Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday! Carnival!

Dear Readers,

Mardi Gras! Fat Tuesday! Carnival! (Now I am really out on a linguistic

limb!) Fetter Dienstag! ‘Tlusty Uter! It comes every year and comes big

to the ole’ Big Easy in New Orleans. The event comes from way back in

time.

The Pagan Romans, there is record from the second century, of a grand

indulgent feast near winter’s end followed by a 40 day fast. … Hmmm…

sound familiar?? Shouldn’t surprise us that Christians capitalized on

pre-existent celebrations and places? Did you know that when

Christians converted tribe after tribe in old Europe that they would

build their churches on top of current sacred sites: sacred wells, altars,

sacred groves. Doing this they symbolized to the people that Christ is

the fulfillment of ancient yearnings, Christ is the better way, and of

course: “We won. Get with the program!”
