Ennis Public Theatre debuts ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs’

A funny and poignant comedy premiered at the Ennis Public Theatre last Thursday and continues through this weekend, March 23-25. Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs, the Tony Award winning production that first wowed Broadway in the 1980s — and some may also recall the film based on it that starred Blythe Danner — is an excellent vehicle for the unique talents of the actors who appear in this spirited interpretation of a classic. Set in the Brooklyn, New York neighborhood of Brighton Beach in1937, just after the worst of the Great Depression, the play is based on the first installment of the playwright’s autobiographical trilogy that includes Biloxi Blues and Broadway Bound. It’s been called a coming-of-age comedy and that description suits this reviewer just fine. That’s certainly how the Ennis Public Theatre has showcased it, and excellently at that.
