Recently “Central Texas Gardener,” the KERA-TV show, re-aired a favorite episode of mine. The guest spoke of the many references to gardening in the Bible. I enjoyed learning about the various flowers, plants and herbs that we still enjoy today that have a Biblical history. I have listed some of the most common below. But before I describe some of them, I wanted to share one of my favorite passages from the Bible that refers to the garden: It’s from Isaiah 58:11: “And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.” Gardener Shelley Cramm wrote not long ago in the Dallas Morning News about how planting flowers or herbs mentioned in the Bible gave her added happiness in her work.
