Mrs. P. V. Allen: Pioneering Businesswoman


Lou Ella Pinson Allen, better known as Mrs. P. V. Allen, was an early leader among women in the business life of Ennis. She appears here at a charity luncheon in Fort Worth in 1946. Author’s Note: March is Women’s History Month, and in response to a recent question from a reader about a 1930s article that a member of his family found in a scrapbook, I thought it was a good time to share this story I wrote a few years ago about Lou Ella Allen, better known as Mrs. P. V. Allen, one of Ennis’ earliest and most successful women in business. One of the most distinguished women in the early commercial history of Ennis was Lou Ella Allen (1875-1953), known to locals as Mrs. P. V. Allen, who operated a downtown women’s dress and hat shop for over 40 years. Her contemporary, the author, journalist and civic leader Katie Daffan, is better remembered today but in her time, Allen was a force to reckon with locally and statewide as a pioneer among women in the business world who was also active not only in women’s club activities but in politics.
