Hope for Tomorrow caregiver workshop slated June 9

On Saturday, June 9, 2018, the Dallas and Northeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will host a caregiver wellness workshop to include The Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease, Understanding Dementia Related Behaviors and Improv Techniques at First United Methodist Church in Ennis. With an expected increase of 29% of Texas residents 65+ suffering from Alzheimer’s disease by 2050, the importance of education and connection is key. Education workshops, now including a new technique for bridging the communication gap between patients and their caregivers, are springing up across the nation. “When I started using the techniques I had learned in Improv Comedy with my own father with dementia, our relationship completely changed from tense and quarrelsome to calm and enjoyable,” said Andrea K. Baum, M.Ed., LPC, at Stomping Grounds Comedy Theater and presenting partner for the workshop. “It seems the old adage “laughter is the best medicine” may be more accurate than we have always believed.” The goal of the June 9, 2018 Hope for Tomorrow caregiver wellness workshop is to bring together people who are experiencing the same hardships for education on the disease along with socializing and laughs.
