Melon snatchers


Stealing watermelons was considered quite a crime in Ennis in 1896. Two laborers looking for work, Frank Monroe and George Erwin, trespassed in the field of a farmer named Lindsay and ate a watermelon they found growing there. The farmer actually followed the pair into town and demanded they pay for it. They had no money but the landowner was unrelenting and filed charges against them.
