The oleander: Beautiful but poisonous

I don’t usually talk about planting something I wouldn’t consider for my own garden but in this case, while I can’t recommend it, I want to warn you about it if you insist on having one in your yard or garden. The oleander is lovely. That’s undeniable, and I was so entranced by the 1990s version of the movie Enchanted April that I wanted one. Romantic movie lovers will recall the story in the film of the magical oleander. I was living in an apartment in Dallas at the time and had no space for it, so with a friend I bought one at a garden center as a gift for my mother here in Ennis, blissfully ignorant that it was poisonous. My mother didn’t know either. She planted it and I think it grew for maybe a year before Mom found out it could be dangerous if ingested, so she got rid of it. She had grandchildren to look after in those days and it wasn’t worth the risk. Read stories like this and more in your latest edition of The Ennis News. Be informed, subscribe today!
