Annexation reform petition gaining momentum


A petition to turn Ellis county into a “Tier 2” county with the hopes of putting an item for annexation on the November ballot is gaining steam. A group of Ellis County residents who are demanding that they have a say in whether to be annexed by local municipalities are stepping up efforts to gather some 15,000 signatures. Petitioners said while they acknowledge that some residents enjoy the benefits of being part of a city, they point out that annexation can bring with it higher taxes, more regulations, ordinances and permitting requirements, as well as sewer and utility limitations or expensive infrastructure hookups, which property owners have to pay for out of pocket in most cases. Many proponents of the reclassification say they value the freedom they enjoy in rural Texas. They said they have invested a lot of time, money and resources while building in the county.
