Police seize counterfeit DVDs and CDs

After receiving a tip about the selling of counterfeit movies and music at a local business, Ennis police have confiscated 2,455 illegally duplicated DVDs and CDs.
Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said a representative from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) contacted him regarding the beauty supply shop at 305 S.W. Main St. producing counterfeit entertainment. RIAA sent an investigator to purchase forgeries and observed the merchandise in plain sight. The investigator stated the merchandise had alternate artwork on the covers and other slight changes to the products.
Hopson, along with Officer Jeff Bates and RIAA representatives, went to the location and searched the premises after the suspect signed a consent form. Hopson reported police inventoried 1,226 CDs, 1,229 DVDs, large quantities of blank discs and a six-disc DVD/CD duplicator.
Hopson valued the merchandise at approximately $42,970.
The suspect has not yet been identified pending charges. Hopson said “labeling” is one charge the suspect faces.
Labeling is punishable by a fine of $25,000-$250,000, imprisonment for one to five years or a combination of both depending on the length of time the offense has occurred.
