Navarro offers paralegal program

As the Navarro College Paralegal Program enters its 19th year, administrators say both demand for paralegal professionals and paralegal salaries are at an all-time high.
Earlier this summer, Metroplex newspapers reported the average paralegal/legal assistant in the Dallas/Fort Worth area earns more than $50,000 annually. The U.S. Department of Labor has projected that paralegal jobs will grow at a rate much faster than average through the year 2014.
Offering a two-year associates degree and a one-year paralegal certificate, the Navarro College Paralegal Program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work with a licensed attorney in a highly professional office atmosphere and the courtroom environment.
Paralegals perform stimulating, rewarding work including developing and maintaining client relations, factual and legal research, and trial preparation. The Navarro College Paralegal Program fosters a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and the role and responsibilities of paralegals. It integrates legal theory with workplace application to help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to embark on successful and lucrative paralegal careers.
“The Navarro College Paralegal Program reflects a commitment to educational excellence and appreciation for academic challenge,” said Damara Watkins, program director. “Additionally, employers value the essential educational foundation that students of the program receive.
Credited with much of the program’s success are its experienced instructors including Watkins, who is a graduate of Corsicana High School, Southern Methodist University and the University of Texas School of Law. With a background in criminal trial law and expertise in a variety of legal fields, administrators said Watkins seeks to instill both professional and legal skills in students as both mentor and instructor. Watkins heads a team of instructors, which includes attorneys, judges and legal professionals.
“This fall, we want to invite interested students to take their place among the most sought after paralegals in the field,” Watkins said. “Students can join the Navarro College Paralegal Program to become a credentialed paralegal, build a portfolio of work that showcases their capabilities, and leave equipped to become a vital member of a legal services team.”
Courses are offered on-campus and online to accommodate any schedule. Late registration is currently available as is financial aid.
