Coach shares thoughts on his team’s preparation

As for the maroon team, coach Sam Harrell said the Lions haven’t dwelled on last week’s Cedar Hill scrimmage and instead have been focused on the first matchup that counts – Waco U on Friday.
The coach doesn’t hold week one in any higher regard than the rest, but added that everyone is eager to begin the ’07 campaign the right way.
“It doesn’t mean the season is ruined if you lose the opener, but it’s important to start off on the right foot,” he said.
“A win on Friday puts us in a better position for week two in terms of confidence.”
There aren’t any Lions to speak of on the injury report. Looking toward keys to victory, Harrell emphases minimizing mental mistakes after the Lions committed too many in their intra-squad scrimmage, as well as the Cedar Hill scrimmage.
“Protecting the ball is big and there’s a chance of rain, but that doesn’t change our offense,” he said.
“We’ve got to play our game in any kind weather and that means creating some turnovers on the defensive side too. A lot of [University] guys play both ways, so we think conditioning could become a factor. We’ve worked hard on our conditioning and hopefully it could pay off in the second half.”
