Essay contest for scholarship announced

Ellis County Judge Chad Adams has announced that an essay contest is underway for the purpose of awarding $5,000 in scholarship money.
The scholarship was made available as a result of Ellis County receiving the National Association of Counties County Courthouse Award in August.
“The award recognized Judge Bob Carroll’s leadership and the community-wide dedication to taking care of children that exists here in Ellis County,” said Adams. “So it is especially fitting that through this award we are able to help some young people go on to pursue higher education.”
“I am deeply honored to have the opportunity to play a part on a team that is trying to help children in our community,” said County Court at Law Judge Bob Carroll. “If possible, I am even more excited about being able to provide this scholarship money to a deserving student.”
Adams said the County will hold an essay contest in which students are asked to write about a real-life experience helping others.
“We are interested in hearing about what these young people have already done, whether it be a mission trip, working with Habitat for Humanity, mentoring a younger child – whatever it is,” Adams said. “The reason being that we believe these past accomplishments will give us a glimpse of what they will go on to do in the future.”
Essays will be judged by an independent panel of judges.
The winner will receive $4,000 and runners up will each receive $500, all made payable directly to an institute of higher education.
“There’s no restriction on which school,” Adams noted. “That’s up to the recipient.”
Essays must be fewer than 1,000 words, typed double-spaced and in a readable font such as Times New Roman. Applicants must include their name, address and telephone number on each page. Submissions can be mailed to: Ellis County Judge Chad Adams, 101 W. Main Street, Waxahachie, TX 75165.
“The deadline for submitting essays is January 15, 2007,” said Adams. “We’ll announce the winner in February.”
