Durbin indicted

Ennis City Commissioner Dr. Stephen Durbin was indicted by a grand jury in Waxahachie Wednesday.
Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson of Ennis Police Department said the case could go to trial as early as February.
Durbin surrendered to authorities Aug. 18 after a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of improper photography or video recording.
According to police, complaints were received the previous day that one of Durbin’s female employees discovered a wireless color video camera hidden in the changing room of his office at 400 W. Ennis Ave.
It was reported the camera was used to film the female staff changing clothes.
Police also said the employees later confronted Durbin about the camera and recorded his admission to the crime on a digital audio recording.
Hopson confirmed police have the audio recording in custody.
“I think we have a pretty strong case,” Hopson said following Durbin’s arrest. “I wouldn’t have arrested him if I didn’t think we did.”
Mark Griffith, Durbin’s attorney, has maintained his client is not guilty. He said the complaints toward Durbin are false and have been generated by a disgruntled employee.
At the time of his arrest Durbin was transported to the Wayne McCollum Detention Center in Waxahachie and released later that day on a $1,000 bond.
Durbin could face up to two years of jail time if convicted of the state jail felony, but he would also be eligible for probation.
