Alleged shoplifter taken into custody

An Ennis man was arrested Friday for evading arrest following an alleged attempt to take two 30-packs of alcohol from HEB.
Det. Sgt. Mike Hopson said at 9 a.m. Patrol Sgt. Fred Pontley and Officer Jason York were dispatched to the business in reference to a theft. The store manager told police the suspect attempted to push a shopping cart with the stolen merchandise past the cash registers and out the door without paying. The manager told the man to stop, at which point the suspect fled out of the store leaving the cases of beer behind and continued running on foot.
Hopson said a description of the suspect was obtained and the man was located nearby.
Officers instructed the man to stop but he failed to comply and continued running on foot. Hopson said police told the man to stop a second time but he again continued to flee.
The suspect was eventually stopped in the 100 block of W. Milam St. after a short foot chase.
The man was taken into custody and transported to Ennis police department without further incident.
L.C. Sheffield, 49, of Ennis was charged with theft and evading arrest.
