Meals on Wheels –– and a smile to boot

The holiday season is here with bells on. But bells or no bells, we can do some of the ringing ourselves!
Aiding the Johnson and Ellis Counties Meals on Wheels (see front page story) is one way to “ring” in the season this year. The organization that supplies prepared meals for elderly, indigent or disabled residents is in need of volunteers.
“This time of year, elderly and disabled people who live alone tend to suffer from depression, and there is an even greater need to check on them,” said Shanna Dunn, volunteer coordinator for the Ellis County offices of Meals on Wheels. “With the holidays approaching, it’s more important than ever for dedicated volunteers to be available.”
If you want to make a difference in the lives of others, helping Meals on Wheels deliver lunches during the holidays is the ticket. If you are unable to deliver meals, maybe you can contribute a few dollars to help with the cost of their preparation (only $6 a plate).
Remember, with Meals on Wheels you aren’t just enabling a person in need to have a hot lunch, you’re providing a little companionship when it matters most. Many more people than we might like to think about are without close relatives or friends. This is difficult enough throughout the rest of the year but during the holidays it can be especially hard to cope with.
“With daily contact from our volunteers, Meals-on-Wheels helps deal with the loneliness many homebound persons feel on a regular basis, and especially during the holidays,” said Dunn. “In some cases, the volunteer might be the only person a senior or disabled resident sees all day.”
Put your smile and handshake –– maybe even a hug –– to extra good use this year by supporting your local Meals on Wheels program.
