Czech dance classes on tap

The Ennis branch of the Ellis County Czech Heritage Society is stepping lively.
The group is sponsoring a “beginners” dance class for young people (ages 6-12) to be held at the SPJST Lodge.
“We hope to encourage the youth of Ennis to enjoy again the polkas and waltzes that our forefathers danced in Czechoslovakia before immigrating to this great land of ours,” said the organization’s reporter Elaine Gallagher, a lifelong Ennisite, local historian and frequent contributor to the Ennis Daily News.
Gallagher added that after students learn basic steps to traditional dances, they will advance to more specialized dances like the “7 Step” polka, the “Flying Dutchman” and “Annie in the Cabbage Patch.”
According to Gallagher, following the first year of the youth class, organizer Marita Barak and others expect to add a dance group geared to teens and young adults, ages 16-26.
“This group we hope will develop into an ensemble that can eventually demonstrate some of the national dances of the Czech Republic,” Gallagher said.
The first class will meet at 3 p.m. this Sunday, Dec. 2 in the SPJST Lodge dining room. All interested youth and their parents are invited.
For more information contact Barak at 972-878-3968.
