Garrett Fire Dept. gets grant

It’s quickly become one of the most important pieces of equipment any fire department can have, and now local firefighters will have one of the most modern, high-tech versions.
This week Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company awarded a $9,870 grant to the Garrett Area Rural Volunteer Fire Department for the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera.
As part of the group’s endowment initiative, employees are able to nominate fire departments for grants. A special regional task force of employees and agents reviews the nominations and selects winners. Stacey Slovacek, a senior financial specialist at Fireman’s Fund, nominated Garrett.
“Hundreds of residents in the Garrett area will benefit from this important piece of equipment,” said Slovacek. “It’s important we provide our rescuers with the gear and tools they need to do their jobs the best they can, and we hope this grant will make a difference.”
The device uses updated technology to enable the department’s firefighters to see through smoke and darkness to quickly locate anyone trapped in a building during a fire. The camera can also play a major role in reducing property damage. With a thermal imaging camera in hand, firefighters can often locate hot spots inside walls and extinguish them before they spread.
Chief Wilkinson, local firefighters, and Fireman’s Fund employees came together Tuesday for the presentation of the grant package.
The equipment is being paid for by Fireman’s Fund, which provides grants to fire departments through its Fireman’s Fund Heritage program.
Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company is a premier property and casualty insurance company providing personal, commercial and specialty insurance products nationwide.
