Tests saving kids from drug abuse

We’re several months into the school year and reports indicate that Ennis ISD’s new drug testing program is working smoothly.
When this program was first announced, we voiced our support for the idea and we are now glad to see that it seems to be having the desired effect. Some may consider randomly testing students for illegal drugs to be an unnecessary intrusion into their private lives. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is not a “gotcha” program with the goal of punishing bad behavior. Instead, it’s a way for students to avoid drug use to begin with.
By having this program in place, in which some students involved in extra-curricular activities are randomly tested, the school district is providing a valuable tool in the battle against drugs. When faced with peer pressure, students have another reason to just say no – they don’t want to jeopardize their opportunity to participate in UIL activities. We’re also encouraged that steroids are among the drugs being tested for. The dangers of steroid use are very much in the news lately, and it’s good to know that Ennis students have yet another very good reason to steer clear of them.
It’s a very positive sign that only one student has tested positive in the program so far this year. We hope that is the first and last positive test result.
Students today face temptations and threats that were uncommon, if not unheard of, in generations before.
Ennis ISD’s new drug testing policy can help save them from a life of drug abuse and bad choices. If even one child is kept away from using drugs, the effort will have been worth it.
