A column about columns

Nearly every week for the past two-and-a-half years I have attempted to plug in some sort of opinion piece that would evoke a feeling of humor, interest or astonishment for the reader.
Sometimes these ideas came easily and other times I would be scrambling at noon on a Wednesday searching for any possible inkling of a topic that I could get 600 words out of. You know which weeks I’m talking about. Those were the ones where after reading my column you decided that sheet of paper would be better served as birdcage liner than passing it on to another human.
It seems my most memorable columns have been the ones I get the most criticism over. I have in the past upset not only readers and non-readers, but also co-workers because of my polarizing opinions. It is not that I am against certain groups of people, but occasionally when I get my thought process onto paper it is a little too honest for some readers and for others the reader doesn’t catch my sarcasm, which is understandable because humor is hard to convey in print.
This week happens to be one of those that I don’t have anything meaningful to say, therefore I am writing about what it is like to have a weekly column.
When I was first given free reign to express my radical views on the unsuspecting victims of Ennis I was overjoyed. I could say almost anything I wanted about any person or organization of my choosing with few repercussions because it was my opinion. However, I quickly realized not everything I cared that much about was worth sharing.
It has become a mighty task to find subjects I know more than a little about that a mass audience cares to learn about.
I mostly try to stick to humorous stories involving my family that show our idiosyncrasies. I think a lot of people can relate to quirky family members that make you want to find a new group to be related with. Hopefully my stories make you realize that everyone out there is weird in their own way and you probably aren’t going to find anything better than your own family tree.
Another subject I stick to closely is the entertainment industry. I have followed Hollywood for several years and feel I have enough knowledge about the subject to relate current events from that group for your reading edification.
One thing I have learned through this column is that the one’s I take a firm stand on and express a clear and blunt opinion in are the column’s that make the most people angry. I will receive emails telling me what a great column I wrote about a certain subject that brings some confrontational topic to the surface, but the people who are offended by my opinion don’t respond in any other way except to complain to everyone else about it. If you don’t agree with me and want to gripe about me then go ahead and send me an email.
I will read it and try to consider your point of view when I touch on that subject again in the future.
I am glad people talk about the subjects I put in this space every Thursday and I hope you all look forward to my columns in the future. If you don’t like my column and only read this to see me fall on my face like I do with a certain ignorant website concerning the county then I am sorry you feel that way, but as long as I get a paycheck from the Ennis Daily News it will continue.
