Ferris church to turn 150 years old

An anniversary program and reception, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church of Ferris will be held Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. at the facility, located at 201 N. Church St. in Ferris.
All former members, pastors and the public at large are invited to help the members celebrate this commemorative occasion.
150 years ago on April 28, 1858, some 13 residents of Bluff Springs near Bear Creek, three miles west of Ferris, met with representatives of the Red Oak Presbytery of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and asked to be constituted as a congregation of that Presbytery. The request was granted and the congregation met in a log cabin 1.5 miles west of Ferris until 1875 when they moved to Ferris and erected a frame structure on the present lot where the brick building erected in 1925 still stands and where services are held each Sunday.
At the afternoon service on March 2, following an organ prelude a welcome by Rev. David Sparks will be made.
Hymn 169 – Faith of Our Fathers – will then be sung, followed by a prayer. Karin Gililland, the youth fellowship and Presbyterian Children’s Home will give celebration reports.
Hymn 164 – The Church’s One Foundation – will follow and Virginia Duff will present a church history titled “The First 150 Years.” Sparks will close the program along with Hymn 170 – Onward Christian Soldiers – and a benediction.
Charter and early members of the church who bear such surnames as Andrews, Cox, Duff, Green, Kooken, McKnight, Malloy, Pratt, Orr and Wilson were active in the settlement and development of the City of Ferris.
